ABOUT THE PANEL
Fred Haney, Moderator, SBEC Mentor
Fred Haney, Ph.D., has been a successful venture capital fund manager, private investor, corporate director, and entrepreneur. He was the founding Chairman and CEO of NovaDigm Therapeutics, Inc., Dynamic Reconfigurable Computing, Inc., and PulSentry, Inc. Fred was the founder and manager of the very successful 3i Ventures, California, a subsidiary of 3i Group, the world’s largest Venture Capital company. Fred has served on the board of directors of thirty private companies and four public companies, including Rainbow Technologies., which he helped sell to Safenet, Inc., in a combined deal valued at $1B. He founded Monday Club, a 750 member mentoring network, in 1984, and he was one of ten co-founders, in 1997, of Tech Coast Angels. He was selected as “Director of the Year for Early Stage Companies” by the Forum for Corporate Directors in 2002, and as “Mentor/Angel of the Year” by the American Electronics Association in 1999
Joe Platnick, Panelist, Pasadena Angels, SBEC Mentor
Joe is CEO of FutureBound, an educational video game developer founded at the University of Southern California focused on developing college readiness and access skills for middle- and high-school youth. Prior to FutureBound he was a Partner with Pan Pacific Capital Ltd. With offices in New Zealand, Singapore, Australia, Taiwan and the US, the firm provides Venture Capital financing for the Digital Media, Life Sciences and Cleantech sectors. Since 2004, he has also been an Angel investor in Southern California and is Director Emeritus of the Pasadena Angels, one of the largest Angel groups in the US. Joe’s career has included executive, board, and sales/marketing management positions with Fortune 500 and startup companies He has been a frequent blogger and speaker on entrepreneurship for many local and international events. Joe holds Bachelors and Masters degrees from MIT.
Kristin Hiibner, Panelist, Pasadena Angels
Kristin Hiibner, Ph.D, is an intellectual property attorney with 15+ years of diverse experience in patents, trademarks, trade secrets, licensing, and risk management. Kristin’s Ph.D. is in Organic Chemistry and she has represented companies in a variety of technologies including chemistry, biotechnology, medical devices, microfluidics, optics, and internet based industries.
As an active member of the Pasadena Angels, Kristin invests in early stage Southern California companies. Kristin also is a frequent presenter on intellectual property topics in the Los Angeles area and provides guidance to the entrepreneurial and academic communities in Southern California.
