Annual Report 2015

Dear Friends of the SBEC –

LOOKING BACK ON 2015!

I am pleased to announce that 2015 was an awesome comeback year for the South Bay Entrepreneurial Center (SBEC). After almost losing our way in 2014, we thrived in 2015.

We revamped our SBEC Board from a pay-in Board to become a working Board with specific roles that established a solid foundation for future growth. We overhauled our Incubator and transformed it into a viable Hybrid Incubator/Accelerator program. We shifted our focus to include existing businesses. We adopted Bill Aulet’s teachings from his book Disciplined Entrepreneurship: 24 Steps to a Successful Startup.

We created the role of Lead Mentor to work with our Cohort Members likes like a PPO physician would work with their patients. We added a Specialist Mentor class to work with our Cohorts on an as needed basis as a podiatrist would be brought in by the PPO when their client need a foot specialist. Except our specialists are of the financial, social media, and marketing variety. This new system effectively uses our mentors and deepens their Cohort relationships.

In reality, we are a volunteer driven organization that amassed over 2,500 volunteer hours in serving the SBEC and our constituents. The secret sauce for the SBEC is our people—from our Board to our Mentors, you will not find a more dedicated or committed group of individuals. It’s our people that make the SBEC a special place, a special organization.

On a personal level, I am honored to have served as your Executive Director and helped to provide the positive leadership and structure to energize our growth during 2015.

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2016!

2016 promises to be a great year for the SBEC. Our primary goal is to build and expand upon our 2015 success in order to become a financially sustainable organization.

Again, it will be our people, our volunteers that will drive this organization to further greatness. While the SBEC is here to help, we need your help to continue to grow this organization to the level that Lee, Mike, and Fran had envisioned for the SBEC back in 2011.

If you are at the stage of your life that you would like to give back to the greater entrepreneurial ecosystem of the South Bay as a Mentor, Donor, or Partner of the SBEC do not hesitate to let me know. This is truly an exciting time to be an entrepreneur in Southern California. The SBEC is here to empower innovation by providing education, mentorship, and access to capital. Or, more simply, we are here to help!

Entrepreneurially yours,
Gary L. Polk
Sr. Executive Director
